Elementary Religious Education

As a community of faith, we have a responsibility to ourselves and one another to enter into the process of on-going formation. This process is a life-long journey leading us into a closer, more intimate relationship with Jesus, Risen Christ. Our children are welcomed into this process fully. We offer formation/education classes for all ages, preschool, elementary, junior high, high school, and adult. We are all on this journey together.

Elementary Religious Education/Formation

R.E. Calendar 2007-2008

We invite and encourage our children to experience the Gospel message through proclamation of the Word and faith sharing experiences in the classroom setting. We also emphasize our Liturgical seasons and the implications in our lives. Each grade covers content at developmentally appropriate levels. First grade introduces and focuses upon God, second grade emphasizes who Jesus is and calls us to be through our Sacramental celebrations. In the third grade the children begin to explore the role of the individual as member of a community of believers, a member of the Body of Christ. The fourth graders study the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes and Covenant. The fifth graders go into a much more extensive study of Sacraments and the Gospel call to outreach through our Sacramental responsibilities.

Elementary classes meet on Tuesday and Wednesday at 4:00 and 6:00. We begin in September and conclude at the end of April. Our breaks allow for families to fully celebrate the liturgical seasons, Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Teacher training is required so that our volunteers ministers are fully equipped to go forth and do the work of sharing faith with our children.

Contact Paulette Colin at ext. 110 if you have questions.

Sacrament Preparation

Children in Second or Third grade, respectively, who are viable candidates, will be prepared for Reconciliation and Beyond or Eucharist/Confirmation and Beyond.  This process happens on Sunday mornings with a specific schedule and is in addition to the regular formation/education program as per Diocesan policy.

Children who are second grade and older, who have had no previous religious education and who may or may not have been Baptized are candidates of the OCIC, the Children’s Catechumenate process. This process happens on Sunday mornings in conjunction with the 8:30 Mass.

If you have any questions about the Sacrament preparation process, please contact Paulette in the R.E. office.  (ext. 110)

Adult Faith

Parents are the first and best teachers and sharers of the faith. In order for us, as parents, to be able to do the best job we can do, it is critical that we honor the understanding of on-going formation for ourselves FIRST before we enroll our children in classes. If we do not honor the need for our own formation and growing relationship with God, the rote behavior of just 'dropping off the children for their class' in an empty gesture. Please enter into and embrace the invitation of God's call. There is a link on the Call to Faith icon for adult resources. We have an excellent line-up of adult faith enrichment classes throughout the year. Model good formation practices for your children. We'll see you in class!
